HILTON HEAD ISLAND AT THE US OPEN
Hilton Head Island is a popular tennis destination with eight of the world’s top 100 tennis resorts and camps. In 1971, it received its first national recognition for its tennis amenities when Stan Smith, the No. 1 ranked player in the world, joined The Sea Pines Resort’s team as its touring pro. Stan Smith and Billy Stearns, a renowned tennis coach, opened the Smith Sterns Tennis Academy in the Sea Pines Resort in 2002. With more than 500 public and private tennis courts in the area, Hilton Head Island proves year after year to be a top tennis destination.
In 2022, The Hilton Head Island Visitor’s and Convention Bureau hosted writers at the US Open in New York, presenting the island as a perfect place to hone one’s game. To supplement the pitch, the classic US Open Honey Deuce was transformed and given a Lowcountry flare by using local vodka, honey, and iced tea.
To match the high energy and excitement that encompasses the US Open, bold, bright colors were utilized to brand the Hilton Head Honey Deuce. Tennis is a game of geometry and skill. Hence, geometric shapes build the composition. The Harbour Town Lighthouse stands front and center because it is a recognizable symbol for Hilton Head Island and found within the resort in which Stan Smith and Billy Sterns built their academy. The iconic Adidas Stan Smith tennis shoes can also be found within the design, paying homage to the US Open champion and Hilton Head Island resident.
